The 90's Retro Stars
Bill Clinton, the "Information Superhighway", Alanis Morissette, flannel, Melrose Place, Tickle-Me Elmo, Generation X, Julia Roberts... Ask ten people to name the icons of the nineties and you'll get ten totally different lists. Now there's a weekend radio show that brings it all back...Retro Stars with Dave Stewart.
Musically, the decade was a wild ride. It started with hair bands and boy bands. But by the mid-'90s, modern rock had become so mainstream, the word "alternative" didn't fit anymore... and Seattle was the center of it all.
'90s fashion was about baby-doll dresses, pre-ripped jeans and tattoos. But some of the trendiest clothes of the decade came from the thrift shop. At the salon, ladies were getting the "Rachel" cut and the guys were clipping off their mullets (hopefully).
New words and phrases of the '90s included ebonics, don't ask; don't tell, cybercafes, Hakuna Matata and a holiday called "Festivus" (Seinfeld).
If you love a good scandal, the '90s had plenty... Heidi Fleiss, Amy Fisher and a homemade video by Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. But Matthew McConaughey gave us one of the funniest visuals of the decade... naked bongo drums!
As the '90s came to a close, some worried about Y2K while others worried if a former pro-wrestler could be governor (Jesse "The Body" Ventura).
Along the way, we sneered at Tonya Harding, we feared Lorena Bobbitt, we cheered Forrest Gump, and 90210 became the most famous zip code in America.
The nineties were awesome. Listen to Retro Stars: the 90's Show every Tuesday & Sunday night at 6p.
